Eritrean artists to join Nile Project in Egypt

In preparation for their second US Tour in 2017, musicians from Nile Basin countries will gather in El Gouna, Egypt from October 9 – 20, 2016 to collaborate on composing new music.

The cross-cultural music collaborations brings together thirteen Nile Project artists from Burundi, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda to compose new songs that combine the rich diversity of the region during the 2016/17 season including a 3-month tour of the United States.

The event in Egypt will conclude with two live concerts (in El Gouna on October 19 and at Darb 1718 in Cairo on October 20 at 8pm) and one percussion workshop (in Darb 1718 on October 21 at 2pm).

London based Eritrean kraal player and vocalist Ibrahim Fanous as well as Eritrean-Egyptian Ahmed Omar will participate.

Fanous, who was born in January 1975 in Kassala, a state in eastern Sudan, began his vocal training at a young age in three different languages—Arabic, Tegrenia and Amharic. Fanous has performed internationally throughout North Africa and Europe.

Ahmed Omar was born in Libya to an Eritrean father and Egyptian mother – no surprise that mixing cultures has become part of Ahmed’s creative output. It was after a visit to Eritrea in search of his roots that Omar started to think about the relationships between African and Oriental music and began to search out musicians from other traditions to make the music that became the Africairo project.

Today Ahmed plays bass for leading Egyptian bands such as Senet, El Dor El Awal, Beshir, and Wust El Balad. Ahmed has also organized the AfriCairo Music Festival and is a partner and manager at the Wust El Balad recording studio.

Since its first Gathering in January 2013, the Nile Project Collective has grown to feature 35 musicians from the 11 countries sharing the longest river in the world.

“I am very excited for this year’s edition,” said Mina Girgis, Nile Project Producer & CEO. “In the past, we’ve always had a Musical Director to facilitate our creative process. But this year, we’re experimenting with having no Musical Director. Instead, we’ll distribute these responsibilities among our musicians to explore what’s possible with our participatory leadership framework.”

Throughout its development, the Nile Project has designed and refined an innovative creative process that allows its artists to self-organize by leveraging each other’s strengths in order to unearth a unique sound representative of the Nile watershed as a whole.

By creating award-winning music within a participatory leadership framework, the Nile Project Collective provides a blueprint for new ways in which Nile citizens can organize themselves across sectors to generate creative and mutually-beneficial system-wide solutions in response to their shared hydro-political challenges.
